“Where Do I Start?” — A Simple Guide for How to Start Reading the Bible

One of the questions I’m asked most often—especially by women who are returning to their faith or exploring it more deeply, is “I want to start reading the Bible, but I don’t know where to begin.”

First of all, I love receiving this question. It shows hunger, curiosity, and a desire to know God more intimately through His Word. But I get it. The Bible can feel overwhelming at first, and it’s hard to know how to start reading the Bible. It’s not just one book; it’s many books, filled with poetry, history, prophecy, wisdom, and Gospel truth. And it’s such a good basis for a prayer practice. So where should someone begin?

Here are a few doable starting points, and what I typically suggest when I am asked.

1. Begin with the Daily Mass Readings

You can find them each day on USCCB.org. They’re short, focused passages taken from the Old Testament, Psalms, New Testament letters, and the Gospels, chosen specifically for the liturgical year. If you’re Catholic, this is a beautiful way to stay connected to the rhythm of the Church and be formed by Scripture daily.

Bonus: if you read them in the morning, you’ll carry those words with you throughout the day.

2. Subscribe to Blessed is She’s Daily Devotional Emails

If you’re looking for reflections written by women, for women—this is a favorite resource, and how I started my daily practice.  Blessed is She sends out short daily devotionals based on the Mass readings. The readings are always linked in the emails, so it’s a great option if you don’t have a physical Bible with you. They’re accessible, prayerful, and often written by women walking through the same seasons of life you might be in. You can subscribe at blessedisshe.net.

3. Try the Bible in a Year Podcast with Fr. Mike Schmitz

If you’re ready for a deeper dive, this is one of the most popular resources out there for good reason. I still haven’t done it, but I have heard incredible things. Fr. Mike walks you through the entire Bible, using a reading plan that ties everything together beautifully. You can listen in your car, while making dinner, or during your quiet time. No pressure to “keep up”—just press play.

4. Pick One Book of the Bible and Sit With It

If you’d rather not jump around, you can always start with a single book. The Gospel of Mark is a great place to begin—it’s fast-paced and action-packed. Or try the Psalms if you’re in a more contemplative season. Or the Letter of James if you’re looking for wisdom on how to live faithfully. Don’t worry about “doing it right”—just start reading and let the Holy Spirit guide you. (Blessed is She also has studies on the Gospels of Matthew and John)

The most important thing isn’t where you start, but that you start. Open the Word, even if it’s just for five minutes a day. God will meet you there. And if you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up over it. Just pick it back up where you started.

If you’d like to journey with others, reach out to your parish to find out what Bible studies or small groups they offer. You might be surprised by what’s available—and how encouraging it can be to read Scripture in community.
