My Morning Prayer Routine

Over the last year I’ve developed a really great prayer routine in the mornings. It helps me start my day off rooted in Scripture, and having prayed for all the things on my heart that day. It’s my favorite way to set the tone for the day, and I happily wake up each morning and dive in for 25-30 minutes.

Yes, you read that right. 20-30 minutes. You don’t have to start this way, though. I certainly didn’t. But evenings don’t work for me – I usually want to read a fiction book before bed. And during the day I am much more likely to get caught up doing other things. So I do what works for me. It’s easy to get up 15 minutes earlier and not scroll on my phone as soon as I wake up, because I know what I am waking up for is SO MUCH better than anything I can find on social media.

But my routine consists of a couple of things, and I did want to share what they are, in case you want to start your own routine. My suggestion is to start small. Choose ONE thing. If you want to start with praying more vocal prayers, then my recommendation is Nunc Coepi. If you want to start with Scripture, then a Bible is your best bet. Start with what you feel comfortable with, and I promise, you will see the fruits of the extra time you are putting in.

Nunc Coepi

This book is used daily to remind us to pray, to put ourselves in Jesus’s presence. It’s 365 day book and it has really helped to remind me to put myself in the presence of the Lord and to say my prayers.

Daily Prayers for My Husband

I have found that praying intentionally for my husband each morning has made such a difference in our days. It gives me a specific intention for him and reminds me that he is loved by God as much as I am.

Scripture

Last year, I started to integrate reading my Bible and it has been one of the best parts of my morning. I read the daily readings (you can find them here). I love to read the day’s readings and reflect on how they can be applied to my life. The Bible I use is currently out of stock, but this one looks like a great option. I love to highlight phrases and words that stand out to me, and I use these markers.

Devotional

I subscribe to the Blessed is She devotionals, which get sent right to my inbox each morning. You can also access the daily readings through the e-mails. I love gaining new perspectives from the authors of the daily devotionals.

Journaling

Once I have finished all of these things, I journal for a little bit. This can be related to the readings, or the daily devotional, or just anything that is on my heart. It’s just a nice way to get my thoughts on paper and out of my head.

I try to do this every day of the week, even on the weekends. But on days I don’t manage it, I do what I can. My routine also changes for the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent, and I usually do a devotional specific to the season. For the last few years, I have been doing the devotionals from Blessed is She, and I absolutely love them. They are consumable, so I write in them, highlight in them, and really dive in.
