Your Next Read | Newport
You know that once I visited Newport, I had to read a novel set in the coastal New England town, right? I saw this book in the gift shop of The Breakers Mansion once we had finished our tour and I snapped a photo of the cover (along with about 7 other books). This was the first one I read, and I enjoyed it, although it definitely wouldn’t make a top list of books for me. Newport by Jill Morrow had a little bit of a mystery, some romance, and was a nice, quick read.
Its 1921 – the Great War is over, Prohibition is in full swing, and New England’s elite inhabits the town of Newport. Attorney Adrian De La Noye has some experience in Newport, where he spent time in his youth. But this time, he is back to draft up and execute a new will for one of his more prominent clients, Bennet Chapman. Chapman’s children have concerns over their father’s much younger bride-to-be Catherine Walsh and her intentions. But Chapman is convinced that his first wife is communicating with him via seance, and that she has chosen his new bride for him. For Adrian, encountering Catherine brings up memories from decades earlier.
Still, Adrian is here to carry out his professional obligations – even if it means unearthing secrets he tried away long ago.
