Miami Children’s Museum

If you have little ones in Miami, you have to take them to the Miami Children’s Museum. Nestled on Watson Island, across from the Port of Miami, it’s the perfect spot to take your children for a day of learning and exploring. The building contains 17 galleries, a preschool, a charter school, an educational gift shop, an auditorium, and a Subway.
Galleries and Exhibits
The permanent galleries range from a bank, to a grocery store, to a physical fitness gallery. My kids personally LOVE the fire truck and veterinarian’s galleries. Other favorites include the aquarium and the room that tells them all about cruise ships! I really love that they get to explore real-life occupations and how the world around them works. The museum does a superb job of highlighting our community helpers, too.
The exhibits provide a safe environment to play, deliver solid content through interaction with the exhibits, materials and diverse media, and offer interdisciplinary experiences in the arts, culture, and community.
There are also traveling exhibits – currently on display is Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit. We had a chance to visit the exhibit, and the kids loved seeing the works of some of their favorite Eric Carle books brought to life. You can watch a video of our experience here.
Because the Museum serves the community, they often have events – for holidays and special occasions. When Caleb was younger, we did an awesome Mommy & Me class at the museum that we absolutely loved. You can find those special activities listed here.
Tickets
The Museum is still operating under limited capacity protocol, which means they have limited capacity and three timed sessions throughout the day. They also use advanced contactless e-ticketing, which means you need to buy your tickets online in advance.
Aside from the museum and its exhibits and galleries, Miami Children’s Museum is dedicated to education through many outreach programs. I already mentioned that they have a charter school and a preschool, but they also have summer camps, classes and clubs, and outreach programs for theater and sensory art.
Sensory Saturday
On the second Saturday of every month, Miami Children’s Museum offers a sensory friendly experience for children with disabilities and their families. Explore the Museum in a sensory modified and supportive setting with limited admission, as well as lowered sound and lighting. Speak to service providers and learn about community resources available to you and your family. Enjoy a sensory friendly stage performance and participate in a variety of sensory based activities. Our goal is to provide your child with the opportunity to engage in social interactions and improve the processing, modulation and regulation of sensory input to increase their understanding of and participation in a natural environment. You’ll also have the opportunity to network with other families.
Admission to Sensory Friendly Saturday is FREE with required RSVP.
